For this project, I began with a copy of Life Magazine from May 17th, 1968. I created these works using the actual pages of this one-week compendium of a now historicized moment in time. Struck by the particularities of the printed lens and the physical properties of the magazine paper, I was compelled to isolate and reconfigure the edges, borders, and peripheral spaces of the pages. I cut these background spaces into small brick-like units to create new abstract space that now behaves as foreground. These literal ruptures and renewals of the paper resonate with the constellation of political and cultural changes over the last forty years. The resulting compositions complicate and confuse one’s sense of location, perspective, and proximity, while revealing and isolating the visual properties of the paper.
